Why I Started Western Slope Accident Care

How It Happened

Your experience is probably similar to mine: It was December 2019 and I was on my way home from a haircut. I was about a mile from home and had to stop suddenly in traffic. My first thought was “that was close”, but the car behind me wasn’t as fortunate and I was rear-ended. I remember my head slamming against the head rest and immediately began dreading what the ensuing days had in store for me. I was able to drive my car to the side of the highway but knew immediately that it wasn’t driving right.

The next 30 minutes were a blur. The police showed up and wrote a report, but I didn’t even have the wherewithal to take a picture of the other person’s car. Since I was pretty close to home, I was able to drive my car there… barely.

As a physical therapist, I had a good sense of what was coming. By the end of the day, I had a headache, and over the next several days I began to experience neck and low back pain, pain down my left leg, as well as memory problems and difficulty concentrating – telltale signs of a concussion. I thought I could get better with my own rehab plan, but it became apparent very quickly that I was going to need some hands-on work to help me get better.

My Physical Therapy Experience

Luckily, I had begun working part-time for a company that specialized in car accidents. I talked to my boss, and she not only recommended a good lawyer (those insurance case managers can be pesky), but also got me into physical therapy and massage therapy almost immediately. I was also able to set up an appointment with a concussion specialist, who helped me get my brain working better than it had prior to the accident! I did 6 weeks of PT and massage to get back to about 90%, and the rest of the pain gradually resolved over the next couple months.

Lessons I Learned For My Business

There are a couple of unique aspects of the company that took care of me that I try to emulate in this business. First, they were able to get me in for physical therapy almost immediately. At Western Slope Accident Care, my goal is see new patients within 3 days of receiving their referral, and so far I have been successful. Second, I received physical therapy in my home, which was a godsend since I was already having enough trouble trying to balance working with a dysfunctional brain while managing transportation and healthcare. This is one of the reasons I started Western Slope Accident Care in Grand Junction, CO, because I know there are a lot of people who would benefit from not needing to worry about how to get to their appointments when someone could come to them instead.
